Two things are essential for the use of a camera: it must fit well in the hand and be easy and comfortable to hold. This result is most likely to be provided by the use of hand straps, which offer a good grip and provide the necessary hold. There are a wide variety of variants and thus they not only fulfil a practical purpose, but can also contribute a lot to the look. The right hand strap is also both functional and an adornment for the device to which it has been attached.
Hand straps are made in many different materials. Many are made of plastic and are connected to the camera via corresponding attachment points. Others are very elegant, made of cowhide or suede, and their appearance alone gives the impression of style and professionalism. It is up to the user whether he or she chooses a model with inner padding or prefers the simple design with a simple strap. Leather has the advantage that even in hot weather the hands do not start to sweat in the strap and this material does not cause an unpleasant feeling on the skin. Plastic, on the other hand, offers a high level of tear resistance on the material and thus a secure hold that can be guaranteed in all situations.
There are both hand straps that can be adjusted and those that do not have this function. Adjustable hand straps offer the possibility to significantly increase comfort and thus also provide a better grip for the hand when using the camera. They can be freely varied in size up to a certain degree, so that both small and large hands can be considered for use. This is ideal if both the partner and the woman are working with such a device, or if the children are to be introduced to its use. In this context, it should also be said that there are also very small hand straps, which are a clear advantage especially for use with children. Leather, on the other hand, is not as flexible to adjust, but here too there are variants that can be adjusted by means of a buckle and a hole. The leather itself is soft against the skin and its structure ensures that slipping cannot take place.
Hand straps, however, do not necessarily have to be intended for holding the camera securely and comfortably during use. Some of them can also be used to simply carry the camera on your wrist and thus keep it ready for use when the right subject comes in front of your lens. Here, too, there is a choice between plastic models and leather straps, with the latter variant again providing a very classy impression. But plastic is also a good choice in this context, because nylon or other synthetic fibres have a high tensile strength and can therefore hold the camera on the arm even in situations where it is subject to greater strain.
Attaching the straps is quite simple, depending on the system of the camera. However, attention must be paid to the type of attachment to the device so that the straps can be used. There are models with both large and small attachment points. The respective strap must therefore be adapted to the requirements of the camera, because attaching other models is not possible and would only entail the danger that the camera would suddenly fall to the ground. However, the straps themselves can be inserted quickly and easily without prior knowledge once you have bought the right ones. So it doesn't take long and you are ready to go. This procedure can be done in any situation, whether you are standing on the top of a mountain or walking on the beach.
Hand straps are a must, especially for amateur photographers, but many professionals also like to rely on these little helpers and always have them with them for safety, because you never know when your camera needs to be ready for use. In such cases, a quick reaction and a steady hand are required, and the camera is simply easier to guide if a stabilising hand strap has been attached.
