360-degree cameras have not been on the market for long. They are offered by established manufacturers of photo and video accessories as well as by some start-ups that have specialised specifically in the development of panorama cameras. Accordingly, the available models are very different, have different features and are all suitable for different purposes. For this reason, there are some factors you should consider when buying a panorama camera. Just like when buying a compact camera or reflex camera, it is therefore advisable to inform yourself in advance and compare prices, functions and differences. Basically, 360-degree cameras are easy to use and not as complex as other camera systems. Nevertheless, there are some points you should consider when buying.
But what exactly is a 360-degree camera anyway? Basically, it is built just like any other photo or video camera. It consists of a housing, a memory card, an image sensor and a lens. The last point, however, is the biggest difference: A normal lens captures a subject that is focused by the photographer. A 360-degree camera, however, captures a complete panoramic image. For this reason, they are also called panorama cameras. Another common synonym for this type of camera is "VR camera", where VR stands for "virtual reality". Unlike conventional panoramas, not only a horizontal strip is captured. All directions can be imaged. Accordingly, they are also called omnidirectional cameras. Only a few panorama cameras offer only a photo function; most can also record 360-degree videos. A 360-degree photo or video shows everything that is in the vicinity of the camera: the floor, the sky as well as the people in the vicinity of the camera.
The pictures and videos that a 360-degree camera can take are extraordinary and impressive. With such a camera, you can capture anything you feel like:
Panoramic cameras are therefore popular for both travel and leisure. Athletes like to use the modern cameras just as much as hikers, for example.
You can then view the 360-degree photos or videos taken either with VR glasses or on a PC or smartphone. Viewing with VR glasses in particular is very spectacular because you then have the feeling of being in the middle of the action. If you look to the left, the image recording also pans in this direction. If you point your eyes upwards, the image moves towards the sky. This creates a very realistic impression and you feel as if you are reliving the recorded scene.
However, for this to be possible, you also need VR glasses. If you don't want to make this investment, you can alternatively use your smartphone or tablet to view your 360-degree photos and videos. To do this, simply turn the mobile device in the desired direction. The sensors detect your movements and transmit them to the 360-degree recording so that the viewing angle changes accordingly. On the computer, you simply adjust the viewing direction with the mouse.
360-degree cameras come in different designs and variants. Basically, a distinction is made between the following four groups:
Which type of 360-degree camera is best for you depends on your requirements and the desired purpose.
These models are particularly popular because they provide an inexpensive introduction to 360-degree photography. They are often characterised by an elongated shape, so you can hold them quite comfortably for filming and photography. It is also possible to attach them to a tripod.
The action cameras with 360-degree function are characterised by a cube- or sphere-shaped design. They are usually attached to a bracket. The housing of these models is particularly sturdy because they are also used in extreme conditions - such as climbing or mountain biking. Many models in this category can withstand dust, dirt and shocks without any problems. In addition, they are often waterproof, so they can even accompany you on dives or other sports in and on the water.
Special adapters are also available that turn the smartphone into a 360-degree camera. Corresponding devices are available especially for iPhones, but they are also offered for many Android smartphones. Although you have to accept a few sacrifices in terms of performance and quality with these devices, you get a cheap and convenient way to take 360-degree photos and videos and can transfer them directly to your smartphone for viewing.
A camera rig for 360-degree recording is a frame to which you can attach several cameras. The cameras are mounted so that each of them points in a different direction. In this way, the entire environment is captured. With the help of special software, the individual cameras are synchronised and the images are combined to form a 360-degree panorama. In this way, impressive resolutions are created.
Finally, there are professional 360-degree cameras that meet the highest demands. For such a model, you will pay at least a four-digit amount. Often, the acquisition costs even reach five-digit amounts. However, these cameras are only used in professional film production. They are usually made up of individual high-resolution cameras that are connected to each other by a complex mount.
If you are planning to buy a 360-degree camera but are still unsure which model is right for you, we recommend comparing all the models on offer. Make sure to focus on the following four points:
1. image quality
2. available connections
3. ease of use
4. features
The image quality is not only determined by the resolution of the camera, but also by the built-in sensor. If you want to record videos, you should choose a model with at least Full HD resolution. This produces brilliant and sharp video recordings. Also check which connections the camera has and it is best to read testimonials. This way you can find out whether the camera is intuitive and easy to use.
Last but not least, take a look at the equipment and the additional accessories available. To shoot spectacular films or take impressive photos, suitable accessories are sometimes indispensable. This applies in particular to tripods or camera mounts. They ensure that you no longer have to hold the camera yourself and that you can take pictures and videos without shaking. Depending on the desired purpose, you can also use such mounts to attach the camera anywhere you want - for example on the roof of a car, on the helmet of a motorbike or on a drone. If you plan to use the camera for such purposes, you should therefore check whether corresponding accessories are available for the camera before you buy it.
