For some they are more of a gag and for others a serious tool: filter adapters for cameras and video cameras are practical little helpers that can significantly simplify everyday life for photographers. They make it possible to combine filters with lenses to make more use of the creative possibilities in photography. There is a wide range of filters available, suitable for both complete beginners and seasoned professional photographers. Essentially, filters alter the photographed image even before it hits the camera's image sensor. They are not unlike slides: a circular, usually coloured element is placed on the lens to create a desired effect. To connect filter and lens, so-called filter adapters are used.
A distinction is usually made between screw-on and plug-in filters. The procedure should be self-explanatory. What is more diverse, however, is the choice of filters. In addition to the popular colour filters, a wide range of other variants is available. For example, polarisation filters, which are often used in photography to prevent unwanted reflections on metallic surfaces. This variant is particularly interesting for product photography. UV filters are another option: they mask ultraviolet light to prevent unwanted colour aberrations in photos. Other lenses allow a soft-focus effect or the addition of playful stars or other objects. This is where creative people can fully let off steam. However, it should be mentioned that the use of filters is hardly common in digital photography. All effects and corrections that are carried out with "real" filters are nowadays post-processed by the photographer in the image editing programme. However, colour filters are still interesting for fans of analogue photography. Particularly frequently used variants are used in black and white photography. Orange, yellow or red ones can be used, for example, to change the contrast, or to reduce the blue and white content to make the colour of the sky more prominent.
Adapter things can be used not only to use photo filters, but also to use filters and lenses with a different diameter. If your lens measures 46 millimetres, for example, you can use a 46-52 adapter to use a 52 millimetre filter. Adapters of the extra class can even be connected magnetically, without any screwing or plugging. In terms of price, such adapter rings are mainly in the two-digit range, starting at around 10€. High-quality adapters, with which it is even possible to exchange lenses across manufacturers and enjoy the full range of functions, can quickly add up to 1000€. Of course, it has to be weighed up here whether the user actually needs this scope of use. If you just want to try out a simple soft-focus effect without digital post-processing, an inexpensive adapter ring is already the best choice. Somewhat more exotic adapters even make it possible to use high-power lenses for high magnification. However, this variant is more for observation or less for photography or videography.
