When depth of field and perspective are important, tilt-and-shift lenses offer photographers an exceptional level of control. Shifts can be used to look up or down without having to tilt the camera. This eliminates the "plunging lines" effect that often spoils architectural shots in particular. Tilting shifts the plane of focus to widen or reduce the depth of field in landscape shots or still lifes.
