What sensor size do I need? This is one of the most important questions that buyers of a camera ask themselves. However, with the multitude of camera models with image sensors of different sizes, most people quickly lose track. That's why we want to keep the question simpler.
Do you want a large or small sensor?
The shallow depth of field of large sensors helps to deliberately create bokeh. You can make a subject in the foreground razor sharp while keeping the background blurred. It contributes to an aesthetically pleasing overall image. However, the shallow depth of field makes it difficult to capture sharp macro images, such as flowers or insects. The bokeh effect is particularly popular in portrait photography. For cameras with small sensors, you need to get closer to the subject or switch to a longer focal length to create the same effect. Also, keep in mind that the larger the sensor, the larger, heavier, and more expensive the camera and lens usually are. For photographers with large hands, a larger camera in particular may also be easier to handle. So it's not necessarily an advantage if the camera is particularly compact.
