Datacolor expands its popular Spyder Checkr product line with the Spyder Checkr Photo - a pocket-sized color reference tool for camera calibration with ultra-matte color patches.

In combination with the supplied software, color correction data for hue, saturation and luminance are calculated using a reference shot and made available in the form of an HSL preset for Lightroom, for example. Used in Lightroom, this speeds up and optimizes work processes and creates a uniform colour basis before image editing begins. In this way, the color characteristics of individual optics, different camera systems and recording sensors can be harmonized.

The Spyder Checkr Photo also shows its strengths where camera and RAW converter automatics reach their limits. With difficult subjects with accent or brand colors, monochromatic scenes, pastel colors, low and high-key shots or portrait photos with finely graded skin tones, automatic systems often do not deliver satisfactory results. In contrast to a white balance with a grey card, the advantages of a color reference card such as the Spyder Checkr Photo come into play here, as it is used in combination with the software to analyze and correct individual colors if they deviate from the original. Colors that do not deviate from the original remain untouched. The color patches are characterized by an extremely low degree of reflection, regardless of the angle from which the color chart is viewed. Reflections appear to be non-existent.

In practice, the mattness of a color cannot be valued highly enough, as it minimizes handling errors. For example, a color chart is often used during a photo shoot or video production, but no attention is paid to whether a reflection occurs, caused by a side-mounted light or flash. Such reflections then cause problems later in post-processing. The Spyder Checkr Photo offers the most comprehensive collection of color patches within the Spyder Checkr product family, which includes 62 target patches in 4 interchangeable cards for all types of photography: advanced skin tones for portraits; large target patches for easy white/grey balancing; and a 24-step gray scale for perfect exposure and instant dynamic range checking.
