To achieve the best results with the white reflector, you should place it relatively close to your subject.

The black side is not actually a reflector, but a tool that you can use as a shade to minimize unwanted light. By using the black-coated reflector, you can create shadows in your picture (e.g. on the model's cheeks) and thus visually shape the face.
