Details
The Sony RX10 IV combines the best of mobility and speed in a compact camera body.
It is equipped with many first-class features such as super-fast autofocus with a response time of just 0.03 seconds, enabling continuous shooting at 24 frames per second with permanent focus tracking, and with 315 phase-detection AF points, it plays in the league of the fastest professional cameras in terms of precision. The flexible 24-600 millimeteriv F2.4-4 ZEISS® Vario-Sonnar T* lens also covers almost every relevant focal length for photographers.
The RX10 IV camera is equipped with the latest 20.1-megapixel stacked CMOS sensor (Type 1.0) with DRAM chip, the powerful BIONZ X™ image processor plus front-end LSI. These three centerpieces of the RX10 IV work together to bring the camera up to speed. They also guarantee top-notch image quality at all times, whether at 24 or 600 millimetersiv focal length.
Fast focus, fast shooting
As the first camera in the RX10 series, the new RX10 IV makes use of the Fast Hybrid AF system, which evaluates the information provided by the 315 phase autofocus points. Contrast and Phase AF together cover about 65% of the entire sensor surface. This is the only reason why the RX10 IV manages to focus in less than 0.03 secondsii.
In addition, the RX10 IV is the first Cyber-Shot camera with "High-Density Tracking AF" technology. It was previously only installed in a few select cameras with Sony interchangeable lenses. "High-density tracking" not only focuses on the autofocus points on the subject, but also includes the surrounding ones in the focus calculation. This increases tracking and focus accuracy enormously: for example, focus tracking works even with birds or athletes who change running or flying directions frequently and quickly.
The new RX10 IV's standard autofocus features include enhanced versions of Eye AF, Touch Focus and Focus Range Limiter. AF-ON is also transferable, as are many AF modes, such as AF-S, AF-C and AF-A. So every photographer can find the setting that's perfect for them.
To ensure that the camera never misses an important moment, the RX10 IV has a continuous shooting speed of up to 24 frames per second with full AF/AE tracking. It can put up to 249 images in a row on the memory card. To help the photographer's eye keep up with the speed, Sony has significantly reduced the viewfinder delay during continuous shooting. In addition, continuous shooting can be displayed in groups instead of as individual shots. This is especially convenient when evaluating images after shooting.
The RX10 IV features a high-speed anti-distortion shutter (maximum shutter speed: 1/320000 second), which reduces the "rolling shutter effect" that usually occurs with fast-moving subjects. In addition, the RX10 IV can shoot completely silently in all modes - including continuous shooting - as long as the electronic shutter is engaged. A mechanical shutter mode is also available.
ZEISS® Vario-Sonnar T 24-600mm F2.4-F4 lens*
The 24-600 millimeter ZEISS® Vario-Sonnar T* lens on the Cyber-Shot RX10 IV camera features a tremendous F2.4-F4.0 aperture and delivers outstanding image quality across the entire focal length range. Image quality is provided by a super ED (extra-low dispersion) glass lens and ED aspherical lenses to prevent chromatic aberration. The ZEISS® T* coating is used to minimize shadow effects.
To ensure that no photo is blurred, an Optical SteadyShot image stabilizer is built into the lens. The Optical SteadyShot can compensate for up to 4.5 f-stops.
In addition, the lens is capable of producing superbly detailed digital macro images thanks to a close focus distance of 72 centimeters and a maximum magnification of x0.49.
Professional video recording
The new RX10 IV is the latest Cyber-Shot RX camera to take advantage of 4K (QFHD 3840 x 2160) video recording with its Fast Hybrid AF system, focusing at an average of two times faster than the RX10 III.
In 4K mode, the new RX10 IV relies on "Full Pixel Readout," capturing approximately 1.7x more information than is required for 4K movie playback, where even the finest details are accurately captured. The camera utilizes the XAVC S™ codec while recording video at high data rates of up to 100 Mbps, depending on the recording mode. Users have the option to record in 24p or 30p in 4K mode, or up to 120p frame rate in Full HD mode.
The new camera offers video professionals several setting options including Picture Profile, S-Gamut/S-Log2, Gamma Display Assist, Proxy recording, Time Code / User Bit, and has an external microphone input and output for headphones.
Super slow motion[ii] video recording is possible up to four seconds (in quality priority mode) and seven seconds (in shoot time priority). This allows users to choose between 1000fps, 500fps and 250fps and between 50p, 25p and 24p playback formats[iii].
Improved operation and personalization
The new RX10 IV provides full visibility with the latest 3.0-type 1.44M pixel tilting LCD screen with Touch Focus and Touch Pad function. In addition, it features an approximately 2.35M pixel high-contrast XGA OLED Tru-Finder™ viewfinder that ensures lifelike photo preview and playback functionality. Triple lens rings for aperture, Zoom and focus facilitate operation. The aperture ring is worth its weight in gold, especially when shooting silent video.
To enhance personalizations, there is the "My Menu" function. Up to 30 personalized menu entries can be saved here. The entries are color-coded to make finding your way around the menu as easy as possible.
The RX10 IV is also dust and moisture resistant as well as Wi-Fi, NFC and Bluetooth compatible.
