Details
More speed, more versatility, more performance - the Nikon Z6 II is an updated version of the all-around mirrorless camera designed for high-end photo and video applications. Despite the wealth of upgrades, the Nikon Z6 II retains its familiar form factor and valued image quality - to the benefit of working multimedia photographers.
The Nikon Z6 II features a 24.5-MP BSI CMOS sensor and dual EXPEED 6 image processors. It features greater buffer depth and a faster continuous shooting rate - up to 14 fps with single-point AF or 12 fps in other focus modes. Video recording is possible at UHD 4K 30p or up to FHD 120p for slow motion, and external recording gets 10-bit output and support for N-Log and HLG (HDR). The sensor is also suitable for working in varying lighting conditions, with sensitivity ranging from ISO 100-51200, and the body's own 5-axis vibration reduction reduces camera shake for sharper handheld shots. In addition, the sensor features a 273-point phase-detection AF system that now supports eye-detect AF in wide-area AF modes and during movie recording, and enables low-light focusing down to -4.5 EV.
The Nikon Z6 II retains its overall physical design, but has been equipped with a new dual memory card slot interface that can accommodate a CFexpress Type B card and an SD UHS-II card for more flexible storage. The high-resolution 3.6-million-dot OLED EVF and 3.2-inch, 2.1-million-dot rear LCD with tilting touchscreen provide versatile image composition and playback capabilities. Wireless SnapBridge connectivity can be used to remotely control the camera, share images to a mobile device, and even for over-the-air firmware updates.
Firmware version 1.10 unlocks UHD 4K recording at frame rates of 60p and 50p, enables raw video output to external Blackmagic Design Video Assist recorders, and improves eye detection performance when using Auto-Area AF and Wide-Area AF modes.
Second generation Z
Nikon has re-engineered the Z 6 platform to offer more speed, faster processing and greater versatility without sacrificing the beloved qualities of the original camera.
Dual EXPEED 6 image processors offer increased buffer performance, a faster continuous shooting rate of 14 frames per second, and noticeably reduced blackout times in the viewfinder.
Updated autofocus now offers eye and face detection for people and animals in wide-area AF mode, for both still and video shooting.
Timed long exposures are now possible for up to 900 seconds (15 minutes) without the need for an external remote.
Two memory card slots provide more flexible file storage options; one CFexpress Type B and one SD UHS-II slot allow for overflow, split, and repeated storage options.
The USB Type-C port allows in-camera charging or continuous power for on-the-go charging or extended shooting.
The direction of rotation of the focus ring on lenses can be switched to suit your habit.
HDR mode (HLG) support on external recordings instantly delivers HDR-ready video files for instant playback. N-Log is also available for better control during post-production and grading.
A future firmware update will enable UHD 4K 60p recording in addition to the current 30p frame rate.
An optional ProRes RAW upgrade allows output of ProRes RAW material to a compatible external Atomos recorder. This upgrade provides greater flexibility in color correction with the ProRes codec, as well as the ability to output uncompressed 12-bit raw material via HDMI. This upgrade will be available in early 2021.
Wireless SnapBridge connectivity can be used to update the camera's firmware, rather than relying on a memory card-based system for updates.
Updated creative shooting modes include multiple exposure, 20 different Picture Control settings and in-camera time-lapse. There's also a Focus Shift mode for shooting up to 300 consecutive frames, shifting the focus position between shots for focus stacking applications.
Compatible with optional MB-N11 Power Battery Pack for additional battery life and improved handling.
24.5-MP FX-format BSI CMOS sensor and dual EXPEED 6 processors
The 24.5MP BSI CMOS sensor enables all-around shooting, impressive low-light quality, and high readout speed that benefits continuous shooting, movies, and time-lapse photography. The sensor's back-illuminated design provides noticeably clean, high-sensitivity output for reduced noise when working at high ISOs, up to a native ISO 51200, as well as vivid and consistent quality at sensitivities as low as ISO 100. The sensor is supported by dual EXPEED 6 image processors for high speed throughout the camera system, including the ability to shoot continuous shooting at 14 frames per second for up to 124 consecutive frames.
UHD 4K video recording
By leveraging the sensor and processor capabilities for more than just still images, the Nikon Z6 II is also a more than capable multimedia camera. UHD 4K video recording is possible with full pixel readout up to 30p, and Full HD 1080p video recording is also supported at up to 120p for slow motion playback. Video files can be stored on the camera's internal memory cards or as an uncompressed file on an optional external recorder via the HDMI output.
With the Nikon Z6 II, advanced video features have been added, including N-Log gamma for capturing flat-looking footage that maximizes dynamic range, and HLG (HDR) for capturing HDR-ready footage. Other additions include the ability to output high-quality 10-bit data via HDMI and an electronic VR function for smooth handheld shooting. Focus Peaking can be used to enhance manual focus control, and a zebra-striping option is also available to detect overexposed areas within the image. Audio can be recorded via the built-in stereo microphone. Optionally, an external microphone can be connected via the 3.5mm stereo jack for better quality control, and live monitoring is possible via the headphone jack.
Firmware version 1.10 unlocks UHD 4K recording at frame rates of 60p and 50p, and enables raw video output to external Blackmagic Design Video Assist recorders. It also improves the eye detection performance of Auto-Area AF and Wide-Area AF modes.
273-point phase-detection AF system.
There is an array of 273 phase-detection AF points on the sensor, covering 90% of the image area both vertically and horizontally. This provides fast and precise focusing for both stills and video. The wide coverage area means subject tracking works right up close to the edges of the image. For video shooting, Hybrid AF is available that automatically switches between phase and contrast detection systems to ensure smooth focusing during shooting. In addition, the latest NIKKOR Z lenses are optimized for quiet operation.
Vibration reduction
The body's own 5-axis Sensor Shift Vibration Reduction compensates for camera shake by up to 5 stops, regardless of the Z lens used. This system also works with adapted F-mount lenses when using the optional FTZ adapter, which employs 3-axis stabilization.
Body design
A large 3.2" 2.1 million pixel LCD screen provides bright, clear and vivid image reproduction and live view shooting. The screen tilts to favor working from both high and low angles. It is also a touchscreen for more intuitive operation, navigation and control of settings.
A 3.6-million-dot electronic OLED viewfinder provides comfortable viewing at eye level. It has a high 0.80x magnification and uses NIKKOR optics to ensure a sharp, clear image. The viewfinder also features a fluorine coating for easier cleaning.
The top of the Nikon Z6 II is equipped with a dot-matrix OLED. This energy-saving display provides quick access to important camera settings.
Equipped with a CFexpress Type B/XQD memory card slot and a UHS-II SD card slot, it provides flexible file storage with the option to use repeated, overflow, or separate storage methods.
The rugged magnesium alloy body is dust and weather resistant, making it easier to work in harsh climates and conditions.
The ergonomic grip and overall form factor are shaped to handle well over extended periods of time, and are further accented by a non-slip material and joystick for seamless adjustments and focus point selection.
Built-in SnapBridge connectivity for seamless low-resolution image transfer and remote shooting capabilities. BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) and Wi-Fi enable communication between the camera and a smart device. Additionally, the mobile device can remotely press the shutter button and display a live view image of the camera to enable working remotely. Additionally, SnapBridge can also be used as an easier method to update the camera's firmware.
