The S5M2 is based on a newly developed full-frame 24-megapixel CMOS sensor and an image processor that is also new, developed under the L² technology partnership between LEICA and LUMIX. For the first time, the sensor in the LUMIX system supports phase detection AF in addition to contrast-based AF, combining both focusing methods to create a new hybrid phase detection AF. Optimized with the latest technology in lens design, the 16-28mm F2.8 DG DN Contemporary is a high-performance lens that delivers outstanding image quality despite compact dimensions. Two large aspheres and five optimally used FLD lenses, whose material has the properties of fluorite glass, keep weight and dimensions low. Likewise, the high-quality lenses provide effective correction of the chromatic aberration and lateral chromatic aberration that often affect the image quality of other ultra-wide-angle designs.

In addition,

the lens takes advantage of the digital correction capabilities of modern cameras to deliver impressive image quality with small dimensions. The constant F2.8 aperture throughout the Zoom range allows for shots with a shallow depth of field and beautiful background blur, especially for close-up subjects. Blur circles are soft and round thanks to the nine rounded aperture blades, so the background doesn't distract from the foreground subject in focus.
