By using Cokin Gray filters allow photographers and filmmakers to influence the light falling on the sensor as needed and desired. This makes it possible to film with an open aperture or to take portraits with an open aperture. By extending the shutter speed, it is also possible to achieve specific effects such as "foggy water" or "distorted cloud formations". Gray filters can be used in outdoor photography, landscape photography and studio photography.
Not all cameras have shutter speeds beyond 1/4000 second. Therefore, in many cases it is necessary to stop down, although it is not desired. The same applies in studio photography. There, the sync speed varies between 1/160 and 1/250 (if no HiSpeed Synch is available), which makes a portrait with open aperture impossible for some subjects.
Gray filters can help in both cases, because these color-neutral filters can compensate for up to 3 f-stops. This opens up many possibilities for photographers and filmmakers to creatively implement projects.
