Details
This lens opens up unimagined creative perspectives for photographers. With its 35mm full-frame coverage, 14mm focal length for an extra-wide angle of view, and F2-surpassing F1.8 speed, the SIGMA 14mm F1.8 DG HSM Art is the fast ultra-wide-angle lens many photographers have been waiting for.
Although there are already some Zoom lenses that cover 14mm, the F1.8 speed is an unprecedented value. The extreme angle of view and the closest focusing distance of 27cm let you create close-ups with the main subject present in the foreground and the background impressively wide. On the other hand, the extraordinary F1.8 speed allows a high-resolution main subject with background bokeh at its finest.
Its angle of view and F1.8 speed are also reasons why this 14mm lens is ideal for shooting the night sky and other nocturnal celestial scenes, in addition to landscape and architectural photography. The speed provides the necessary potential to capture as much light as possible at fast shutter speeds. This ability to capture moving subjects by adjusting shutter speed alone, rather than ISO sensitivity, provides a reduction in image noise caused by the camera sensor.
Utilizing the extremely wide angle of view to create a dramatic image impression, an ultra-wide angle lens allows you to get close to your subject while capturing a very large portion of the background - with this lens, the angle of view goes far beyond normal human vision.
The SIGMA 14mm F1.8 DG HSM Art combines a very large depth of field, due to the wide angle of view, with a very narrow depth of field, due to the F1.8 speed, resulting in a sharply captured subject that stands out against the expansive background that fades into beautiful bokeh. It's a highly impressive type of photographic expression that was badly lacking until now.
Minimized chromatic aberration
Three FLD ("F" Low Dispersion) glass elements and four SLD (Super Low Dispersion) glass elements minimize lateral chromatic aberration, which is otherwise often visible when shooting with ultra-wide-angle lenses. The result is superior image quality from the center of the image to the edges.
Large diameter aspherical lens element
The SIGMA 12-24mm F4 DG HSM Art was the first SIGMA lens to feature a large 80mm diameter aspherical lens element. Building on the expertise we gained from this success, we also equipped this lens with a large ⌀80mm precision-blanked aspherical front lens. It was this technology that made a 14mm F1.8 possible - the first of its kind.
Minimized distortion
As the front lens, the large precision-blank-pressed aspherical lens with ⌀80mm effectively minimizes distortion. With excellent edge-to-edge illumination, this lens delivers exceptional image quality from the center of the frame to the edge.
Unique bokeh
Even with its 14mm focal length, this ultra-wide-angle lens delivers a very shallow depth of field due to its F1.8 speed, so the subject stands out clearly against the great background bokeh. Only a lens with a large aperture can produce this unique expression.
Fast and reliable autofocus photography
The large Hyper-Sonic Motor (HSM) delivers ample torque to the focusing group for superior speed, while ensuring exceptionally consistent performance even at low speeds**. Together with the optimized AF algorithm, these features ensure fast autofocus photography.
The mount is dust- and splash-proof
Since the mount of a lens is particularly susceptible to dust and other foreign objects, this lens has been designed with rubber sealing to prevent dirt from entering. The front lens element also has a water- and oil-repellent coating, so the lens can be used well in the rain, near water, or in other difficult conditions.
