The "F1.4" expands the Art product line. Building on the experience in wide-angle lens design and especially on knowledge gained through the development of the 35mm F1.4 DG HSM Art and 50mm F1.4 DG HSM Art, sagittal coma, chromatic aberration, distortion and vignetting have been successfully minimized to achieve exceptionally high optical performance with virtually no aberrations or distortions.
This lens offers optimal performance when photographing a variety of subjects, from cityscapes and mountain ranges, to starry night skies that require high imaging performance, to low-light indoor scenes or shots with smooth bokeh.
By minimizing aberrations through the use of the latest technologies and drawing on our expertise from many years of lens development, this lens achieves amazing imaging performance with very high resolution, even at the edges of the image. While rendering the focused subject with high resolution, the 24mm F1.4 DG HSM Art simultaneously provides smooth and natural bokeh. Both high-resolution rendering without chromatic aberration and natural bokeh are possible at open aperture.
Excellent sagittal coma correction
Ideally, a fast lens already exhibits high imaging performance across the entire image area at open aperture. Sagittal coma, for example, in which the rays of a point light source do not meet at one point but create a tail, is a typical reflection that occurs primarily with wide-angle lenses.
The 24mm F1.4 DG HSM Art has an optimized performance design by positioning aspherical lens elements on the back and adjusting the angle of incidence of the light, ensuring high reproduction performance even at open aperture. Reduced distortion of point light sources at the edges of the image makes it perfect for astrophotography and available light.
Excellent chromatic aberration correction
To achieve high imaging performance, chromatic aberration correction is essential. And so minimizing image aberration was a focus during the lens development phase. The lens now incorporates FLD ("F" Low Dispersion) glass and SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass elements, minimizing chromatic aberration that is mainly visible at the periphery, when the image is magnified. Moreover, the overall performance design ensures correction of longitudinal chromatic aberration from the outset, which is difficult to correct later in image processing. This lens achieves high image quality across the entire focus range, ensuring sharp, high-contrast images.
Minimized distortion
Minimizing distortion was an important issue even during the development of this lens. With the 24mm F1.4 DG HSM Art, the angle of incidence of light is adjusted directly with the first lens, and each aspherical glass element has been positioned to optimize performance at each position. This has helped minimize distortion across the entire image field.
High edge-to-edge illumination
Lenses with a wide angle of view naturally tend to have some brightness drop-off in the peripheral areas compared to the center of the image. In the optical design of our new fast wide-angle lens, we have taken into account both the avoidance of artificial vignetting and the minimization of natural edge fall-off as far as possible. As a result, the lens achieves high-contrast results even at open aperture when shooting indoors or astro photos. Even after stopping down once, the 24mm F1.4 DG HSM Art delivers very uniform brightness right to the edges and impresses with its brilliant imaging quality.
Design that eliminates reflections and ghosting
From the very beginning of the lens design process, we studied susceptibility to reflections and ghosting to achieve an optical design that is resistant to even strong backlighting. Super Multi-Layer Coating (SML) reduces flare and ghosting and delivers sharp, high-contrast images, even when backlit. Customization and flexible adjustment of the lens for more comfort or for a special use are easily possible thanks to the SIGMA USB dock and dedicated software.
Round aperture
The near-round aperture consists of 9 aperture blades and provides a very pleasing bokeh outside the image's plane of focus.
Faster focusing
The Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM) enables quiet and very fast AF. The improvement of the AF algorithm makes AF much smoother. The lens also includes a new Manual Override mechanism that switches to manual focus by turning the focus ring in any type of AF operation. This allows the photographer to adjust the focus quickly and easily. Using the optional SIGMA USB dock, conventional Manual Override focusing can also be adjusted.
Brass bayonet
The lens is equipped with a solid and precise brass bayonet. The special surface treatment to reinforce strength enables long-term use.
