SONY FE PZ 16-35 mm F4 G (Power Zoom)

Three years ago, I bought the Sigma 14-24mm F2.8 DG DN Art ultra-wide-angle lens and affectionately called it the "lens of the gods" because the imaging performance was simply incredible, razor-sharp right up to the edges and into the corners even at an aperture of F2.8! No other lens I know, whether premium or fixed focal length, even came close to this sharpness performance.Nevertheless, it was mostly lying around unused in the cupboard. Why? On the one hand, it was hardly suitable for filter photography due to the strongly curved front lens, and on the other hand, at 830 g it was also extremely heavy. I always found it really uncomfortable, worse than my 300 telephoto lens, which weighs even 100 g more. It wasn't actually that big, but in terms of weight it looked like a massive lump of lead on the camera, which was ultimately due to the generous use of solid brass and of course a lot of glass.Now, with a heavy heart, I have sold the Sigma and bought a new ultra-wide-angle lens for the proceeds. A lens that I was more or less disinterested in when it was released around two years ago. It was the SONY FE PZ 16-35 mm F4 G.The abbreviation PZ stands for Powerzoom and is primarily used by Sony for video lenses. In fact, it is equipped with great features for videographers. It has hardly any focus breathing and allows very smooth and gentle zoom movements thanks to the built-in motor control. As I am not at all interested in video filming, I initially thought that this lens would be of no interest to me. But far from it!Because it is also convincing as a photo lens. But first things first. The SELP1635G is extremely compact and weighs just 350 g! When zooming, it does not change its size; the lenses are moved internally by a motor. This is absolutely silent and adaptive in terms of speed. The focal length range of 16 - 35 mm is very universal and so it is also suitable as an all-rounder. Thanks to the flat front lens and filter thread, it is fully filter-compatible. The fact that it is only an aperture 4 lens doesn't bother me, for landscape and architecture you stop down anyway and usually use apertures between 4 and 11. It is also sealed against dust and moisture and has a rubber lip on the bayonet.In tests, the lens is predominantly very well received, especially among English-speaking YouTubers it is downright hyped as the G-Master Killer. At Digitalkamera.de it is described as cheap and of inferior workmanship and an extreme loss of resolution at the 16 mm focal length is attested. So the cheap workmanship and feel is absolute nonsense! It is exactly the same as we know it from other newer G and G-Master lenses, there is no difference. Only the weight is lower, but that's exactly the highlight of this lens!And now to the imaging performance. Admittedly, I was prepared to compromise. But when I took the first test shots, I was extremely positively surprised and initially even thought that it was on a par with the Sigma. Where other ultra-wide-angle lenses often produce pixel mud in the edges and corners, this one achieves very good sharpness throughout. If you look very closely, you will actually notice a little edge flare at 16 mm. But overall this is still a top performance from the lens. In the 24 mm focal length, practically none of this can be seen and it outperforms the 24 mm F1.4 G-Master lens, for example, by worlds! I also consider the 35 mm focal length to be on a par with first-class fixed focal lengths. The backlight behavior is also very good. I have not yet been able to detect any flares. CA's are also automatically corrected directly in the camera or in the RAW converter, so that you are ultimately spared them in the image results.However, there is one special feature that I have never noticed before with a lens. The best sharpness performance is actually achieved at an aperture of F4 and maintained up to F5.6. At F8, slight diffraction blurring already occurs. Nevertheless, you can still work well up to aperture F11 - if necessary for the depth of field. Pictures with an aperture of F22 are almost unusable and appear blurred. However, this effect is largely due to my A7R V with its 61 megapixel sensor. I was unable to reproduce this effect on my A7C with 24 megapixels. Overall, the lens harmonizes very well with my A7R V and delivers high-resolution results. I am completely satisfied and am pleased that carrying around a brick (Sigma) is a thing of the past.Nevertheless, the Sigma was still a touch sharper and more perfect. Whether this plays a role in practice, however, I honestly don't think so. The Sony Powerzoom is clearly better than the Sony Zeiss 16-35 mm and also beats the G-Master fixed focal length 24 mm F1.4 at 24 mm. It is also said to have better edge-to-edge sharpness than the G-Master 16-35 mm F2.8, but I cannot confirm this from my own experience as I have never had these lenses.The new Powerzoom 16-35 mm F4 is one of these modern lenses that were already calculated for digital corrections during development. This may or may not be a good thing. The fact is, however, that very compact and lightweight designs are possible in a way that has never been seen before. As long as the image results generated from RAW are convincing across the board, I honestly couldn't care less.

SONY FE PZ 16-35 mm F4 G (Power Zoom)

Vor drei Jahren hatte ich mir das Sigma 14-24mm F2,8 DG DN Art Ultraweitwinkel-Objektiv gekauft und liebevoll "Götterlinse" genannt, weil die Abbildungsleistungen einfach abartig gut waren, rasiermesserscharf bis zum Rand und in die Ecken bereits bei Offenblende F2,8! Kein mir bekanntes Objektiv, egal ob Premium- oder Festbrennweite kam auch nur annähernd an diese Schärfeleistungen heran.

Dennoch lag es überwiegend ungenutzt im Schrank herum. Warum? Zum einen war es für Filterfotografie aufgrund der stark gewölbten Frontlinse kaum geeignet, zum anderen war es mit 830 g auch extrem schwer. Ich fand es immer richtig unangenehm, schlimmer als mein 300er Tele, welches sogar noch 100 g mehr auf die Waage bringt. Denn eigentlich war es gar nicht so groß gebaut, aber es wirkte gewichtstechnisch wie ein massiver Bleiklumpen an der Kamera, was letztlich dem großzügigen Einsatz von massivem Messing und natürlich jeder Menge Glas geschuldet war.

Nun habe ich das Sigma schweren Herzens verkauft und mir für den Verkaufserlös ein neues Ultraweitwinkelobjektiv geholt. Ein Objektiv, welches ich bei Erscheinen vor rund zwei Jahren mehr oder weniger desinteressiert zur Kenntnis genommen hatte. Und zwar das SONY FE PZ 16-35 mm F4 G.

Das Kürzel PZ steht für Powerzoom und kommt bei Sony primär für Videoobjektive zum Einsatz. Tatsächlich ist es für Videofilmer mit tollen Features ausgestattet. Es hat kaum Focusbreathing und erlaubt durch die verbaute Motorsteuerung ganz sanfte und weiche Zoomfahrten. Da ich mich für das Videofilmen absolut nicht interessiere, dachte ich anfangs, dass dieses Objektiv für mich uninteressant wäre. Aber weit gefehlt!

Denn auch als Fotoobjektiv weiß es zu überzeugen. Doch der Reihe nach. Das SELP1635G ist extrem kompakt gebaut und wiegt gerade einmal 350 g! Beim Zoomen verändert es nicht seine Größe, die Verschiebung der Linsen findet motorisch im Inneren statt. Und zwar absolut lautlos und seitens Geschwindigkeit adaptiv. Der Brennweitenbereich von 16 - 35 mm ist sehr universell und so eignet es sich auch als Immerdrauf. Dank flacher Frontlinse und Filtergewinde ist es uneingeschränkt filtertauglich. Dass es nur ein Blende 4 Objektiv ist, stört mich nicht, für Landschaft und Architektur blendet man ohnehin ab und nutzt in der Regel Blenden zwischen 4 und 11. Es ist auch gegen Staub- und Feuchtigkeit abgedichtet und verfügt über eine Gummilippe am Bajonett.

In Tests kommt das Objektiv überwiegend sehr gut weg, besonders bei englischsprachigen YouTubern wird es regelrecht als G-Master Killer gehyped. Bei Digitalkamera.de wird es als billig und minderwertig verarbeitet bezeichnet und ein extremer Auflösungsverlust bei der 16er Brennweite attestiert. Also die billige Verarbeitung und Haptik ist absoluter Schwachsinn! Sie ist exakt genauso, wie man es von anderen neueren G- und G-Master Objektiven kennt, da gibt es keinen Unterschied. Lediglich das Gewicht ist geringer, aber genau das ist ja der Clou dieser Linse!

Und nun zu den Abbildungsleistungen. Zugegeben, ich war kompromissbereit. Aber als ich die ersten Testaufnahmen gemacht hatte, war ich extrem positiv überrascht und dachte anfangs sogar, dass es dem Sigma ebenbürtig ist. Wo andere Ultraweitwinkelobjektive im Bereich der Ränder und Ecken oft Pixelmatsch produzieren, wird hier eine durchgängig sehr gute Schärfe erreicht. Beim ganz genauen Hinschauen bemerkt man tatsächlich ein wenig Randabfall bei 16 mm. Aber das ist insgesamt immer noch eine Top-Leistung, die das Objektiv hier bringt. In der 24er Brennweite ist davon praktisch nichts mehr zu sehen und es übertrifft beispielsweise die 24 mm F1,4 G-Master Linse um Welten! Auch die 35 mm Brennweite sehe ich auf dem Niveau erstklassiger Festbrennweiten. Auch das Gegenlichtverhalten ist sehr gut. Flares konnte ich bislang noch nicht ausmachen. Auch CA's werden automatisch direkt in der Kamera bzw. im RAW-Konverter korrigiert, sodass man letztlich bei den Bildergebnissen davon verschont bleibt.

Es gibt jedoch eine Besonderheit, die ich so noch nie zuvor bei einem Objektiv bemerkt habe. Die beste Schärfeleistung wird tatsächlich bei Offenblende F4 erreicht und bis F5,6 gehalten. Bei F8 treten bereits leichte Beugungsunschärfen auf. Dennoch kann man bis Blende F11 - sofern für die Schärfentiefe notwendig - noch gut arbeiten. Bilder mit Blende F22 sind nahezu unbrauchbar und wirken wie weichgezeichnet. Dieser Effekt wird jedoch maßgeblich durch meine A7R V mit ihrem 61 Megapixelsensor verantwortet. An meiner A7C mit 24 Megapixeln konnte ich den Effekt so nicht nachstellen. Insgesamt harmoniert das Objektiv mit meiner A7R V sehr gut und liefert hochauflösende Resultate. Ich bin voll und ganz zufrieden und freue mich, dass das Mitschleppen eines Ziegelsteins (Sigma) der Vergangenheit angehört.

Dennoch war das Sigma noch eine Spur schärfer und perfekter. Ob dies jedoch in der Praxis eine Rolle spielt, glaube ich ehrlich gesagt nicht. Das Sony Powerzoom ist deutlich besser als das Sony Zeiss 16-35 mm und schlägt auch bei 24 mm die G-Master Festbrennweite 24 mm F1,4. Es soll auch eine bessere Randschärfe haben wie die G-Master 16-35 mm F2,8. Aber das kann ich nicht aus eigener Erfahrung bestätigen, da ich diese Linsen nie hatte.

Das neue Powerzoom 16-35 mm F4 ist eines dieser modernen Objektive, die bereits bei der Entwicklung für digitale Korrekturen gerechnet wurden. Das kann man gut finden, oder auch nicht. Fakt ist jedoch, dass so sehr kompakte und leichte Konstruktionen möglich sind, wie man sie zuvor noch nicht gekannt hat. So lange die aus RAW generierten Bildergebnisse auf ganzer Linie überzeugen, ist mir das ehrlich gesagt auch völlig schnuppe.
