Sony 400mm G-Master F2.8 Super Telephoto Lens
The most advanced lens technologies Sony has to offer have been incorporated into this wide aperture super telephoto lens. This allows for remarkable speed, great G Master Series resolution and bokeh effects, reliability, and professional control capabilities. In addition, the SEL400F28GM is the lightest super telephoto lens in its class and offers unprecedented flexibility for handheld shooting.
Newly developed linear XD (Extreme Dynamic) motor.
The linear XD motors in the SEL400F28GM have been redesigned to have higher thrust and efficiency than conventional motors to take full advantage of the rapidly evolving speed of current and future camera bodies. The linear motor design and component layout have been precisely revised to achieve significantly higher thrust. Two of these new motors are incorporated into the SEL400F28GM, resulting in a 5x increase in tracking moving subjects. This means that the extreme speed of modern camera bodies can be used to capture first-class images of the most dynamic sports or nature subjects. The XD motors are also supported by new algorithms developed specifically for them, which significantly improves the motor's response to control signals and reduces the delay and instability that can occur when driving a large-aperture focusing unit for silent operation with low vibration.
Outstanding resolution
All G Master Series lenses meet very high standards and are a guarantee that excellent contrast is maintained at high spatial frequency throughout the image. The optical design incorporates three fluorite elements that help minimize axial aberrations that can be a problem with large aperture lenses, and also limits chromatic aberrations that can reduce resolution toward the image periphery. Bleeding is successfully suppressed, allowing clear reproduction of the finest subject details.
Great, natural bokeh
In addition to extensive control of spherical aberration during the development phase, each lens is individually tested and adjusted during manufacture to achieve the highest possible bokeh quality. A circular aperture mechanism with 11 blades further contributes to smooth, circular bokeh. With the SEL400F28GM, the small depth-of-field range of a 400mm F2.8 lens can be used to create images with rich, powerful out-of-focus backgrounds.
Excellent reflex suppression for perfect sharpness and contrast
Nanocoating of Sony is applied to the surfaces inside the lens to dodge reflections that can cause light flare and ghosting effects. This significantly improves clarity and contrast in the image.
Absolutely lightweight in its class
An innovative optical design with three fluorite elements and a minimal number of elements at the front of the lens barrel is the secret behind the amazingly light weight of this high-quality lens. Another weight-reducing factor is the use of magnesium alloy components in the barrel. Weighing only 2895 grams, the SEL400F28GM offers mobility and handheld handling that active photographers will appreciate. Repeated field testing by professional photographers has resulted in a design that is not front-heavy. This reduces the moment of inertia, which absorbs rotation by up to 50% compared to the SAL500F40G. Faster and more precise panning is ensured for handheld shooting and shooting with a monopod.
Fluorine-coated front element
The fluorine-coated front lens element protects it from smudges and fingerprints, and makes it easier to wipe them off if something does stick to the surface.
Integrated optical image stabilizer with new mode 3
Optical image stabilization is integrated, making it easier to achieve razor-sharp images during handheld shooting. In addition to Mode 2 for panning, the SEL400F28GM features a new Mode 3 with a complex algorithm that facilitates subject capture when tracking moving subjects. Mode 3 provides optimal stabilization for tracking and shooting dynamic, unpredictable sports scenes. 5-axis image stabilization becomes available when using the SEL400F28GM with α-series bodies that have built-in image stabilization.
Focus hold buttons customizable at four locations.
Focus hold buttons in four locations on the lens barrel ensure easy access in any shooting situation. The focus hold buttons can be customized via the camera body menu, which means they can be assigned a user-selected function. For example, AF with eye detection.
Function ring for the first time
The SEL400F28GM is equipped with a new function ring whose switch can be used to select PRESET (preset focus) and FUNCTION functions. Functions such as Power Focus can be assigned to FUNCTION mode via the camera body menu.
APS-C/Full Frame Selection
When the function ring selector is set to FUNCTION, the function ring can be rotated to switch between APS-C and full-frame viewing angles.
Useful filter slot
The SEL400F28GM is equipped with a filter bay that can accommodate ø 40.5 mm ND and other types of filters, as well as the VF-DCPL1 circular polarizer. The VF-DCPL1 circular polarizer can be rotated for the desired polarization when it is plugged into the lens.
Focus range limiter
The focus range limiter switch allows selection of a limited focus range when the fastest possible focusing is required. There are three settings to choose from: FULL, 7 m-2.7 m, and ∞-7 m.
Versatile, very robust tripod mount
The tripod neck ring features easy rotation and high reliability thanks to ball bearings. The tripod neck ring also features 90-degree detent steps and a switch that activates or deactivates the detent steps as needed. With the detents activated, it is easy to switch between horizontal and vertical camera orientation. The detents can be disabled when stepless, low resistance operation is desired.
