With an improved optical design, a powerful VC image stabilizer, and very fast autofocus, the Tamron SP 70-200mm G2 is aimed primarily at professional photographers and ambitious photo enthusiasts. It is suitable for portrait and reportage photography, but also for demanding shots in the fields of sports and landscape.
The lens meets the high design and quality standards of Tamron's SP series in every respect. The lens body is made entirely of metal and is weather sealed.
With 5 stops of compensation, the Tamron SP 70-200mm G2 achieves outstanding image stabilization. The VC mechanism also offers three different modes to adjust compensation to suit the subject. Compared to its predecessor, the SP 70-200mm G2's USD autofocus is significantly faster and even more precise. Two new microchips and an improved AF algorithm provide a dramatic increase in performance compared to the previous model.
The lens is also compatible with the two teleconverters 1.4x (model TC-X14) and 2.0x (model TC-X20), which can extend the focal length by 1.4 and 2.0 times, respectively. Both converters are specifically designed to work with Tamron's new SP lenses.
With Tamron's TAP-in console, the Zoom lens can be customized to meet the photographer's individual needs. A software application and USB connection to a computer can be used to update firmware and adjust autofocus and image stabilization.
Extremely high resolution performance and excellent contrast rendition
The optical design, based on the previous SP 70-200mm model, has been extensively revised. The resolution performance and contrast rendition of the new lens are significantly higher. The barrel incorporates 23 elements in 17 groups, including XLD (eXtra Low Dispersion) and LD (Low Dispersion) glass elements. The special lenses minimize image errors such as chromatic aberrations (color fringes), which are typical of fast telephoto lenses, while at the same time ensuring uniformly high image quality across the entire image area.
Superior image stabilization
The VC image stabilization of Tamron is based on a 3-axis coil system whose performance has been further improved. The response time of the drive unit as well as the control mechanism have been optimized so that compensation over five f-stops is now possible. Telephoto shots in low light are thus much less prone to blur.
The SP 70-200mm G2's VC system also offers three different modes, one of which is perfect for pull-along shots where the camera follows the subject's movement. Mode 1 can be customized via the TAP-in console.
VC Mode 1: Standard continuous stabilization mode that provides an optimal balance between steady viewfinder image and stabilized image projection.
VC Mode 2: Mode specifically for horizontal camera movements (pull-along)
VC mode 3: Maximum stabilization of image projection, viewfinder image is not stabilized
Extremely fast autofocus
The SP 70-200mm G2 is equipped with an ultrasonic ring motor whose outstanding responsiveness ensures extremely fast focusing. By using two very powerful microchips and an improved AF algorithm, focus speed and precision have been significantly accelerated compared to the previous model. If necessary, the automatic focus can be corrected manually at any time without having to switch to manual focus mode (MF) first.
Wonderful bokeh effect
Nine aperture blades form a nearly circular aperture, creating a very harmonious bokeh effect. Background and foreground blur into a wonderfully soft blur.
Versatile use thanks to shorter closest focusing distance
By optimizing the focus and Zoom mechanism inside the lens barrel, the closest focusing distance is shortened from 1.30 meters to 0.95 meters compared to the previous model. This enables a shorter shooting distance and thus a larger imaging scale. In conjunction with the excellent resolution performance, this offers the photographer a wide range of new expression possibilities.
Optimized eBAND coating
All lens elements feature an eBAND (Extendes Bandwidth & Angular-Dependency) coating further developed by Tamron specifically for the SP 70-200mm G2. This technology combines a conventional multi-coating and an extremely thin nano-coating with extremely low refractive index. The high anti-reflective properties of this combination provide very effective anti-reflective coating of the lens surfaces, minimizing stray light and light reflections inside the lens. Even when shooting against the light, the new telephoto zoom lens achieves flawless, brilliant image results.
Weather-sealed design and fluorine coating
The body of the SP 70-200mm G2 is protected against the ingress of splashing water and dust with special seals at all critical points. The lens can be used in any weather and in humid and dirty environments without hesitation. The front lens is coated with a water- and grease-repellent Flour coating. This makes the outer surface particularly easy to clean and insensitive to fingerprints, moisture or damage from adhering dirt particles.
Arca-Swiss compatible tripod clamp
The SP 70-200mm G2 comes with a newly designed tripod clamp. It is compatible with Arca-Swiss quick-release plates and made of lightweight, durable magnesium, the same material used in tripod construction.
The Tamron 24-70mm G2 is a fast F/2.8 Zoom and has been extensively redesigned over its predecessor to offer the highest image quality and performance.
The new Dual MPU (Micro Processing Unit) enables faster autofocus with improved accuracy and world-class image stabilization*1 (CIPA standards of 5 stops).
Tamrons exclusive eBAND coating reduces flare and light reflections inside the lens. Even when shooting backlit, the new Tamron SP 24-70mm F/2.8 Di VC USD G2 achieves flawless, brilliant image results. In addition, the front lens of the A032 model features a water- and grease-repellent fluorine coating. The Tamron SP 24-70mm F/2.8 Di VC USD G2 is protected against splash water and dust ingress at all critical points with special seals. Discerning photographers can use the new fast Zoom lens for a wide range of applications, including landscape, portrait, reportage, travel and more.
Outstanding Performance and Superior Image Quality
The use of special, high-quality glass materials ensures accurate color reproduction and superior sharpness, perfect for the demands of today's high-end camera sensors. The optical design (17 elements in 12 groups) uses 2 XR (Extra Refractive Index) elements, 3 LD (Low Dispersion) elements, 3 GM (Glass-Molded aspherical) elements and a hybrid aspherical lens element.
The high-performance lenses minimize image errors such as chromatic aberrations (color fringes), to which fast Zoom lenses are somewhat more susceptible, while ensuring uniformly high image quality across the entire image area.

Dual-MPU (Micro-Processing Unit) for faster and more precise autofocus and improved image stabilization
The innovative control system uses a dual-MPU design with improved processing power. With this design, autofocus and image stabilization do not share one MPU, but are each controlled by their own processor. This results in faster and more accurate autofocus performance, as well as more powerful image stabilization. In combination, low-light performance has also been improved.
High-performance MPU improves autofocus accuracy and speed
The 24-70mm G2 is equipped with a USD (Ultrasonic Silent Drive) motor to ensure excellent focusing speed and accuracy. The use of a stand-alone MPU enables fast digital signal processing to achieve excellent responsiveness and very precise autofocus control.
