For the professional image creator who needs resolution, speed and video capabilities, there's the Canon EOS R5. This full-frame mirrorless camera sets new standards in versatility. It features a newly developed 45-megapixel CMOS sensor that offers 8K raw video recording, 12fps continuous shooting with a mechanical shutter, and is the first EOS camera to offer 5-axis sensor-shift image stabilization.
In addition to resolution, the sensor, combined with the refined DIGIC X image processor, offers a new generation of Dual Pixel CMOS AF for fast, smooth and intelligent focusing with 1053 selectable points covering the entire field of view. This focusing system has also been updated to use Deep Learning technology for improved subject tracking, as well as accurate eye, face and head detection for people and animals.
Complementing the imaging features, the Canon EOS R5 features a new design familiar to users of the EOS 5 series. An extra-high resolution 0.5-inch electronic viewfinder with 5.76 million pixels offers a realistic 120 fps frame rate, while the 3.2-inch touchscreen LCD monitor on the back features a variable viewing angle to meet the needs of vloggers and make it easier to work from high and low angles. A status LCD on the top provides an intuitive workflow, and the camera has two memory card slots - one for CFexpress Type B and one for SD UHS-II - as well as Bluetooth and Wi-Fi wireless connectivity.
45MP full-frame sensor and DIGIC-X processor
Based on a newly developed 45MP full-frame CMOS sensor, the EOS Canon R5 offers both high-resolution stills and video. The finely tuned DIGIC X image processor complements this with high speed. Sensitivity of ISO 100-51200, which can be expanded to ISO 102400, is suitable for working in a wide range of lighting conditions, while fast continuous shooting at up to 12 fps with mechanical shutter or a quiet 20 fps with electronic shutter is ideal for working with moving subjects.
8K30 raw and 4K120 video recording
The 45-megapixel full-frame sensor enables not only stills, but also high-resolution DCI 8K raw video recording at 30 fps and 4K recording at up to 120 fps in 4:2:2 10-bit with Canon Log. HDR-PQ recording is also possible, with in-camera HDR production and external recording via the HDMI port supporting clean 4K output at up to 60 fps. Both All-I and IPB compression options are available, as is the ability to use Dual Pixel CMOS AF when shooting up to 8K Raw.
Dual-pixel CMOS AF II
The updated Dual Pixel CMOS AF II features 1053 selectable focus points covering approximately 100% of the image field, ensuring wide and even
coverage. This focusing system provides smooth and fast focusing performance, similar to how a camcorder captures focus. This system integrates two separate photodiodes in each pixel to provide a wide and dense network of phase-detection detection elements across much of the image sensor, reducing "focus hunting" and providing faster and more direct control of focus positioning. When working with still images, this focus system provides fast and precise focusing, making it ideal for shooting and tracking moving subjects, ensuring critical focus is achieved in every shot. When shooting video, the Movie Servo AF mode provides smooth and natural focusing when switching between different subjects or varying distances within the scene, as well as the ability to set tracking sensitivity, AF speed, and face tracking priority. Using the Touch AF system, focusing is possible by simply touching elements within the subject on the touchscreen to change focus in an intuitive way. Subject tracking in movies is also improved with the Dual Pixel CMOS AF system's ability to detect subjects and maintain focus even in changing or cluttered scenes.
Subject tracking has also been improved through the use of Deep Learning technology, which helps to gradually refine the focusing system's ability to quickly and accurately detect human and animal subjects. This technology also supports the refined eye, face and head detection functions for humans and animals, which are well suited for portrait applications.
Sensor-shift image stabilizer
As the first EOS camera, the Canon EOS R5 features a 5-axis sensor-shift image stabilizer that compensates for camera shake by up to 8 stops, enabling effective compensation for camera shake when shooting handheld at slow shutter speeds. This stabilization system also works in conjunction with lens-based optical image stabilization for both native RF lenses and adapted EF lenses.
Body design and wireless connectivity
- The high-resolution 0.5-inch, 5.67 million-dot electronic viewfinder provides bright and detailed viewing at eye level. The fast 120fps frame rate enables natural motion rendering for a realistic viewfinder experience.
- The rear 3.2" 2.1 million-dot LCD touchscreen features a vari-angle design that favors front-facing shooting, such as for vlogging, as well as working from high and low shooting angles .
- The top status LCD can be used to quickly check camera and shooting settings .
- CFexpress Type B and SD UHS-II memory card slots are provided for flexible storage needs; the CFexpress slot is ideal for 8K video and fast, high-resolution continuous shooting, while the SD card slot maintains a familiar form factor for broad compatibility .
- Both a 3.5mm headphone jack and 3.5mm external microphone jack are included for enhanced audio monitoring and recording capabilities .
- The refined body design features four different dials for intuitive operation .
- On the back of the camera is a joystick controller for quick and intuitive focus point selection and menu navigation.
The rugged, weatherproof housing is designed for tough working conditions and inclement weather. - Both 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz WiFi bands are available for fast file transfer to a mobile device, and Bluetooth is also available for continuous device connectivity via the Canon Camera Connect app.
